A stunning example of Regency craftsmanship, this mahogany linen press exudes both elegance and intrigue. Featuring two over two generously sized lower drawers and a wardrobe-style top section, it originally housed linen drawers, which have been replaced with a bar for hanging clothes - adding practicality to its timeless design.
The brass drawer hardware steals the show, adorned with the bust of Napoleon Bonaparte. It raises a curious question: what is the famed "enemy of the state" doing on a piece of Regency furniture? Perhaps a nod to his brilliance as a military leader, Napoleon's likeness captivated even those who opposed him. If you have any insights, I'd love to hear them!
This press boasts fully functioning locks, with the original key for the top section and a new one for the drawers. The bone cup-shaped lock escutcheons and proud splayed block feet complete its sophisticated look.
Condition Report
In excellent antique condition, this press is exceptionally solid and of the highest quality. The drawers are lined with sugar paper, run beautifully, and are ready for use. While there are minor knocks, marks, and veneer repairs consistent with age, they only add to its rich character. The lower back panel bears evidence of historic worm, long gone, with no impact on the press’s structural integrity. The press breaks down into three parts to aid transportation. A remarkable piece for those who appreciate history and craftsmanship, this linen press is as functional as it is fascinating.
